Triumph Returning to the AMA Flat Track

It seems that the AMA Flat Track championship is yet again becoming a point of interest amongst the motorcycling nation. For the past few years, we have witnessed an avalanche of various motorcycle manufacturers returning to the sport and some even making their first noteworthy results. Triumph, one of the championship-winning great ones, is coming back.

Although already unofficially present and competing in the GNC championship through the Bonneville Performance team, Triumph has decided to provide factory support and thus make the Bonneville Performance its “factory” team. The rider for the 2012 season is going to be young Mikey Martin, the 2011 Motorcycle-Superstore.com Pro Singles Champion.

Is Triumph going to succeed in its flat tack comeback, it remains to be seen. The path to the top is surely going to be a tough one, but the company did succeed in reaching it three times, in 1967 and ’68 with late Gary Nixon and again in 1970 with Gene Romero.

Along with its racing effort, Bonneville Performance is producing Triumph powered street trackers. They are 1200 cc Triumph twin machines weighing in, with all the fluids included, only 160 kg, or 351 lbs, for our non-metric readers. The cost of getting one these gems in the USA is $26,500. And they don’t look bad either.
